Medieval to Metal: After Hours Art Parties and Gig Guide

Visit Ballarat

08 Aug 2024

Forty iconic guitars from America’s National Guitar Museum are set to take centre stage in an Australian-exclusive exhibition in Ballarat this spring and summer.

Medieval to Metal: The Art & Evolution of the Guitar will go on show at the Art Gallery of Ballarat from 12 October 2024 until 2 February 2025.

Track the history of the world’s most popular instrument from its medieval beginnings through to the guitar’s pivotal role in blues, country, rock ‘n’ roll and metal.

Sharing the spotlight will be an awe-inspiring line-up of photographs, paintings, drawings, illustrative designs and objects.

Celebrate the history of guitars through a nostalgic collection of iconic images by renowned rock photographer Neil Zlozower, alongside photographic works by Australian music documenter Tony Mott.

Across Victoria’s Midwest, we acknowledge that we travel across the ancient landscapes of many First Peoples communities.

These lands have been nurtured and cared for over tens of thousands of years and we respect the work of Traditional Custodians for their ongoing care and protection.

We recognise the past injustices against Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in this country. As our knowledge grows, we hope that we can learn from their resilience and creativity that has guided them for over 60,000 years.

As we invite people to visit and explore Victoria’s Midwest, we ask that alongside us, you also grow to respect the stories, living culture and connection to Country of the Ancestors and Elders of our First Peoples.
