Road trip through the Pyrenees wine region
Situated about 30 minutes outside of Ballarat, the Pyrenees wine region is the sort of place you can drop into for a couple of days or potter around for a week.
However long you stay, you can’t help but have your fair share of delicious food and locally-produced wine.

The Pyrenees might share its name with another famous wine area between France and Spain, but you don’t need to board a plane to discover the remarkable winemakers right on our own doorstep.
There are over 25 wineries in the region, many offering exceptional cellar door experiences, picnics, barrel tastings and award-winning winery restaurants.

Avoca is home to the Pyrenees Unearthed Wine & Food Festival as well as The Avoca Hotel, a beautifully-restored Victorian era pub serving great food and local wine.
But eating and drinking isn’t all you’ll do here – it’s a gorgeous part of the country, with ironbark forests, flora and fauna reserves, great spots to camp or picnic and lots of good bushwalking tracks, including at Mount Buangor and Mount Cole State Forests where you can hike along the Beeripmo walking track or discover waterfalls along the Waterfalls Nature Walk.
For the amateur or serious collector, visit Antiques, Bottles and Collectables in Avoca. Then there’s Beaufort’s Big Garage Sale and Beaufort Christmas Shop that’s also worth the drive.
To really explore the Pyrenees, we highly recommend staying the weekend. Book a night in an Unyoked cabin at Peerick Vineyard and Winery. Facing the remote mountain range, these cabins make for the perfect off-the-grid stay under the stars.
